continuous vertical surface broaching machine with a 350" broach cutting tool capacity and 75,000 lbs. broaching force has been completed and shipped by Ohio Broach & Machine Company.
Believed to be the largest continuous vertical broaching machine ever produced, the overall machine dimensions include a footprint of only 198" x 135" (185 square feet). Designed to conserve manufacturing floor space, the machine reaches a height of 301" (25'), with an estimated machine weight (less tooling) of 14O,000 lbs.
Powered by a 100-HP variable-speed DC motor, coupled through a clutch brake and cone drive, the Ohio Broach designed machine features eight, equally spaced, 24" wide 50" long ram carriers mounted on parallel strands of drive chain. At full cutting speed (32 SFPM), the broaching machine has a cycle time of 75 seconds.
Designed to broach alloy steel components, the machine removes 40% of the stock from the blank in a single

cycle. Unlike horizontal broaches, the vertical configuration of the machine drives the tooling through the workpiece. Horizontal continuous broaching machines move the workpiece through the tooling.
A programmable controlled, rotary indexing table allows the Ohio Broach-designed fixturing to be loaded and unloaded by an operator, while 180 degrees opposite the workpieces are being broached. This table is indexed "on-the-fly," with its position and rotation controlled by the machine's PC (which also keeps track of broach ram carrier positions). The vertical broach is designed to maintain carrier position tolerances of +.0005"/ -.0005".
Ohio Broach & Machine Company engineers, designs and manufactures broaching machines, fixtures, cutting tools, and holders for production industries. The firm also provides custom, contract broaching services and broach equipment rebuilding and maintenance services.
